Foods You Should Never Feed Your Dog

Citrus Fruits

28. Citrus Fruits

Sadly, all citrus fruits are bad for your dog. This is true for every part of the citrus fruit and also includes citrus juices, regardless of whether they are store-bought or homemade.

Lemons, oranges, and grapefruits have a number of toxins that can be lethal for dogs, especially if they are eaten in high quantities. They contain psoralen compounds and aromatic oils, which your dog has no way of digesting. Although the smell of the citrus fruit may be tempting for your dog, eating it would result in acid poisoning, vomiting, and rapid weakness.

People can often be seen giving citrus fruits to their dogs as a joke to make them react to the taste, but even these small amounts can be dangerous. Love your pet, don't make fun of it.

Common symptoms:

  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Shaking

Licorice

29. Licorice

Licorice may seem like a fun treat for humans, but it is an incredibly toxic food for dogs.

Licorice is made of a number of different processed ingredients, none of which are good for your dog. However, one of the biggest issues is the compound glycyrrhizin, which is toxic for dogs. They have no way of digesting this compound, which results in sudden abdominal inflammation and incredible pain.

Dogs will try to sniff out anything they can find in the house, especially when they are left alone, so it is crucial that here are no sweets lying around for them to eat. Unfortunately, the dog is not aware of the fact that if it does eat licorice it will quickly begin to vomit and even lose control of its muscles.

Common symptoms:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Shaking
  • Seizures

Fast Food

30. Fast Food

Fast food may seem like a quick treat for your dog, especially when he is staring at you passionately to give him some! However, you will need to resist those puppy dog eyes if your dog's health is to take priority.

Fast food has no nutritional value for anyone, especially not your dog. It is made from processed meats, fried in deep oil, covered in sauces which are also made from processed ingredients, and has an incredible amount of salt. Your dog is better than that, and does not deserve such a poor treat for being your best friend!

If you find yourself in a situation where your dog is begging for food, you will be a much better owner if you swap the unhealthy food for a delicious, healthy dog treat. It will stop your dog from developing health problems such as weight gain, diabetes, and problems with digestion.

Common symptoms:

  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Diabetes
  • Heart problems
