Making the choice to get your child a pet is a big one, but it will certainly help your child to learn responsibility and will greatly enhance their lives. As you might expect, there are some pets that are better for kids than others.
Though you might think that getting your child a dog or cat is the right answer, it is actually a huge responsibility to take care of one of these animals. Instead, you might want to consider a smaller, easier to care for animal first before choosing a kitten or puppy.
We have come up with a list of 13 great first pets you should consider for your children. We love number 4, but all of them are excellent choices!
1. Betta Fish

Many parents choose fish for their children as a first pet, especially goldfish, but that might not be the best choice. Why? Because goldfish are quite fragile and require an elaborate tank to live a healthy, long life. Instead, a better choice is a Betta fish.
Betta fish are beautiful. They do not require a filter or large tank, and the biggest responsibility your child will have is to feed them and clean the bowl. You can also buy a snail that will eat the algae in the bowl, which makes things even easier! Just note, Bettas are solitary fish, and if you put two in the same bowl, they will fight, so stick with one.
